In a unique episode of The Empathy Podcast, we had the opportunity to chat with Cam, an animal liberation activist from San Diego. This heartfelt conversation took place outdoors, with the tranquil sounds of a stream adding a serene backdrop to the powerful discussion about empathy, activism, and the emotional impact of direct action.

What Does Empathy Mean to Cam?
Cam shared a thoughtful definition of empathy. He explained, “Empathy isn’t just understanding someone’s experience intellectually—it’s about truly stepping into their shoes and feeling what they feel.” He emphasized that empathy involves stripping away judgment and personal biases to connect with the essence of another being’s emotional state.

This distinction between sympathy and empathy is essential. Sympathy may allow us to intellectualize someone’s pain, but empathy lets us feel it. “It’s a complex dynamic to be alive and experience the world from someone else’s lens,” Cam added.

The Emotional Pull of Activism
The conversation naturally shifted toward Cam’s journey in activism. He described participating in a powerful action at Farmer John’s slaughterhouse in Los Angeles. This intense experience involved activists climbing onto the slaughterhouse roof, dropping banners, and even chaining themselves to gates in protest.

Cam reflected on the emotional challenges of these actions: “Fear is always present—whether it’s being on the ground filming or waiting on a rooftop. But the emotional pull to stand up for what’s right outweighs everything else.”

He noted the emotional contagion present in these moments: when surrounded by people experiencing either joy or suffering, it’s almost impossible not to mirror those emotions. “Emotions are contagious,” he said. “You walk into a room, and you feel the energy—whether it’s joy or sorrow.” This emotional mirroring plays a significant role in activism, motivating individuals to act with compassion.

Breaking Barriers Between Humans and Animals
Cam also discussed the importance of recognizing empathy across species. He stressed that animals, just like humans, can feel and express empathy. He gave examples of dogs showing concern when their humans are in pain, demonstrating that empathy isn’t limited to humans.

This recognition strengthens the argument for animal liberation, as empathy bridges the gap between humans and animals. Cam passionately shared his belief that understanding the emotions of other creatures can lead to a more compassionate world.

Confronting the Horrors of Factory Farming
Cam provided insights into the campaign against Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pig exporter. Smithfield’s practices are notorious, with millions of animals suffering annually. As part of the Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) movement, Cam participated in undercover investigations to expose the brutal realities inside these facilities.

“Documenting these horrors and facing legal repercussions takes a toll,” he admitted, “but it’s essential for change.” Cam’s experiences highlight the importance of direct action in raising awareness and pressuring corporations to adopt ethical practices.

Final Thoughts: Empathy as a Tool for Change
Cam’s message throughout the conversation was clear: empathy is a transformative force that can reshape our relationships with both humans and animals. He encouraged listeners to step outside their perspectives, understand others’ contexts, and act with compassion.

His words remind us that the world becomes a better place when we nurture empathy—whether it’s by connecting with others emotionally or standing up against injustice through activism.
